Frequently Asked Questions

With a dedicated server, can I store adult material on it?

No.

Do I need multiple IP addresses to provide virtual hosting?

No. With today's Web browsers, the most common form of virtual hosting is IP less hosting. This is preferred by most people because of it's simplicity..

Why do you use Linux as your main OS for UNIX?

It has proven to be an incredibly stable and fast OS for the Internet - especially Web hosting. For benchmark test results and detailed Linus info, check out Linux's Website.

Can I have another OS installed besides Linux or NT?

Not with EZwebhoster Our technicians specialize in the Linux and NT operating systems - this is how we can solve hardware and software problems so quickly.  Every OS has it's own configuration and troubleshooting guidelines.  It would not be fair to our customers to offer support for any other OS except for the ones that are technicians are completely familiar with.

Does the NT server come with an E-mail server?

No. There are dozens of e-mail servers that you can install but most are commerical and associated with a fee. Our administrators can help you find an e-mail server that will best serve your needs.

With a dedicated server can I provide virtual servers like EZwebhoster does?

Not exactly like EZwebhoster does. EZwebhoster is unique where we give our clients not only their own IP address, but their own copy of the Apache Web server. This allows customers complete flexibility and control over how they want to run their Web site. Each dedicated server is assigned only one IP address by default. More IPs are available. Virtual hosting is available however. Virtual hosting allows you to have multiple domain names that can point to different directories on your server. For full details on virtual hosting contact your EZwebhoster Account Executive.

What is the advantage of a dedicated server over your other 4 options?

The dedicated server option is not the best option for everyone, however for customers that fit any of the below criteria, it is without a doubt, the best choice for an Internet presence:

  • Customers using over 250 megabytes of storage
  • Customers using over 1 gigabyte of data transfer per day
  • Customers using needing multiple IP addresses
  • Customers who want to install application that require root access
  • Customers needing a Windows NT server or Linux OS
  • Customers wanting to give their users separate FTP and TELNET access to their accounts
  • Customers who are knowledgeable with UNIX and want access to all the server files to customize the server to meet their exact needs
  • Customers who are overly cautious about security and do not want to share the hardware
  • Customers who have or plan on hosting a large number of virtual domains

Can I run Real Audio or listserv on your dedicated servers?

Of course! One of the main benefits of having your own dedicated server is the ability to run almost any software made for Linux on your server. We have chosen the Linux operating system because it is one of the most widely used UNIX platforms and Internet software is readily available.

How long does it take to upgrade the server from an existing option?

It only takes about 1-3 days (depending on if the server is in stock) to upgrade a user from one of our current options 1-4 to an option 5 server. Depending on how many megs of data the user has in files, the actual transfer time averages about 1 hour.

Will the current server and its contents remain intact after upgrading from an existing option?

Yes. All the files and their properties remain unchanged. If any programs daemons are running they will have to be restarted but that is all. All the file locations and paths remain the same.
